David Rogers Webb
Senior Strategic Advisor, Securities Law & Asset Preservation
David Rogers Webb Securities Law & Asset Preservation
As Senior Strategic Advisor to the Wealth Wise Empowerment Community Vault (WWECV), Webb brings over three decades of hands-on experience in trading desks, hedge fund management, and the legal frameworks that silently govern today's financial infrastructure. His work focuses on the intersection of securities custody, ownership rights, and investor protection.
Webb provides critical educational guidance on how modern securities are actually held, the legal distinction between "beneficial ownership" and "registered ownership," and practical strategies for asset preservation in an increasingly electronic, intermediary-driven marketplace.
"In 2023, I published 'The Great Taking' to examine how the transition from direct ownership of securities to the modern system of 'security entitlements' under Article 8 of the Uniform Commercial Code affects every investor."
From Trading Floors to Legal Frameworks
Webb's financial journey began in the early 1980s at CompuServe, then moved to Wall Street where he worked at Oppenheimer & Co. (1983–1987) and E.M. Warburg, Pincus & Co. (1987–1990). These formative years gave him a front-row seat to securities markets before electronic settlement systems became dominant—an era when physical certificates and direct registration were the norm.
After leaving Wall Street, he became an investment manager and principal at Primus Venture Partners, then joined Shaker Investments, where he ran multiple funds for institutional and international clients. During the early 2000s market downturn, his strategies reportedly generated substantial positive returns while major indices declined sharply—demonstrating a keen understanding of market mechanics.
Webb founded Verus Investment Management in 2002. While the firm ultimately faced bankruptcy after significant losses, the experience became a transformative moment in his career. Rather than retreating, Webb immersed himself in legal research, meticulously examining how custody, intermediary chains, and Article 8 of the Uniform Commercial Code affect the true nature of securities ownership. This decade-long investigation culminated in his widely-discussed 2023 book, The Great Taking.
